Social Studies in Research: Equipping Graduate Students for Successful Publication

Research and publication are crucial for advancing academic and professional growth, driving innovation, and contributing to knowledge and societal progress. For graduate students, particularly in Social Studies, the ability to publish research is vital  for enhancing research skills and reaching broader audiences, thus influencing informed decision-making. This necessity is highlighted in CHED Memorandum Order Number 15, Series of 2019, which mandates that students in the Master of Science/Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs must publish or provide evidence of acceptance of their research in refereed or indexed journals.

To equip Social Studies graduate students in this venture, the Capstone Project titled "Navigating the Path to Publication: Seminar-Workshop on Research Publication for Graduate Students" was organized under the theme: “Empowering Graduate Students on their Journey to Successful Research Publication” on June 21, 2024 at Western Mindanao State University. This seminar-workshop is an integral component of the Professional Practice in Social Studies Capstone Project of the MAED Social Studies Program, which aims to provide crucial guidance on research publication process.

Dr. Ericson Alieto delivered an insightful lecture on the research publication process, sharing his expertise in generating publishable research ideas and highlighting the significance of research in advancing both academic and practical knowledge. He emphasized that publishing research not only paves the way for other researchers to build upon existing work but also fosters new discoveries and innovations.

The seminar-workshop progressed with a targeted session on effectively searching for reputable journals online. Mr. Juspher Handang, Ms. Kathleen Gregorio, and Ms. Nurfaiza Joe, members of the organizing team, were on hand to guide participants through the process. To promote active engagement, attendees were encouraged to share their search results and discuss potential journal matches. This interactive approach not only enriched the learning experience but also fostered a collaborative atmosphere among participants.

Spearheaded by the MAED Social Studies Program Head, Dr. Arayana Kunting, the workshop offered invaluable insights and practical tips for students to successfully publish their research findings. This seminar-workshop stands as a testament to the commitment to enhancing the research capabilities of graduate students and ensuring their successful journey toward publication.
